How Can I Use AI Effectively to Communicate My Design Ideas?
Sharing information about using AI in the design process.
We’ve noticed that many of our clients are starting to use AI tools to explore and communicate their design ideas. That’s great! We want to help you navigate this new territory so you can use AI ethically and effectively, while ensuring we are aligned on what is currently possible within a professional design workflow.
The most important thing to clarify upfront is that AI is not a shortcut to a finished product. We cannot take an AI-generated image and simply hit "print." While AI is a powerful brainstorming partner, its creative outputs are rarely, if ever, print-ready. Transforming a concept into a high-resolution, properly formatted, production-ready file still requires the time, skill, and nuance of a professional graphic designer.
To be clear: AI is not a replacement for a skilled graphic designer. At BE Ultimate, we are committed to supporting the creativity of our staff, and we see AI as a collaborative tool, not a substitute.
When used correctly, AI can be an excellent tool for teams to streamline the creative process. Here are two of the most effective ways to use it:
1. Generating Initial Ideas
If you're staring at a blank page, talking to an AI chatbot can be incredibly effective. It’s a great way to get past creative blocks. By sharing your stream-of-consciousness thoughts about colors, themes, or feelings you want to evoke, the AI can help pull out concepts you might not have been able to articulate on your own. This is especially useful for people who may have less design experience or limited time (like first-time captains or busy program managers) helping them build a solid foundation to present to our design team.
2. Visualizing Quick Iterations
During the design process, we often share a draft and get a question like, "Can you see what it looks like with a red background instead of green?" While this is a simple change for us, the reality of email and workflow means you might wait a bit for us to receive the request, make the edit, and reply. In these cases, feeding a design into an AI tool allows you to get near-instant feedback. It’s a great way to test directions for yourself, maybe confirming you want to proceed, or realizing that green actually was the right choice after all.
A Note on Expectations
We want to emphasize that directly copying an AI-generated image onto a design template for printing is currently not possible. Please view AI as a tool to guide and inspire our graphic designers. The images you generate are a fantastic way to communicate the mood, style, and elements you love. We ask that you remain open to the idea that technical changes will likely be necessary to translate that vision into a final product that looks great in the real world.
